From the thumbnail it looks as if you've taken a shovel and cut a slice of soil to expose roots!

Thanks, Keith. I don't remember taking this photo, so I don't know what this is. I assumed from the ice that it's of a vertical surface, but there are definitely problems with that interpretation.
