The development of public transit in London, Ontario, has been strongly influenced by the writing of Sigmund Freud. Or so it would seem, anyway -- why else would the London Transit Commission's bus-stop signs be warning you about the id? In accordance with principles of good sign design, of course, "Where is id there shall ego be" has been compressed to "Stop id" (to save space on the sign and allow the use of a larger font).

Fun falsehood: London Adlerians have been boycotting public transit since 1931.

Try it big, as Freud said to Mae West. Just type Z, as he didn't say.

Dutt Changgle, Marco F. Delminho, tiabunna, kiiti and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

I guess if you can't remember when to get off by looking at the surroundings, you can maybe remember to get off at Stop ID 1544? Or is there a local Anti-Freud group on town?

Supposedly if you call the phone number and enter the stop ID you can find out when the next bus is coming. I've never been able to get that to work, though. I never thought I'd miss Toronto transit, but there you just text them and get the answer immediately. Anyway, I git where I was going.

I love the dramatic angle, John, from which you have photographed this cityscape. I hope you have a great weekend. All the best, Jo

Thanks, Joe, and a great weekend to you. The angle is quite striking on the spot, by the way.

Have read and re-read your notes and looked carefully (perhaps TOO carefully?) at the photo and am completely nonplussed by it, John!!!!! The only thing I do know is that there is a London in Toronto. Otherwise I would have been even more bamboozled!

I immediately understood what this sign meant.
I think it's a great design.

The great designers in my country have no idea what the sign is trying to say, so they put a note under the sign saying what it means in Japanese.
The signs for foreign tourists also have a warning in "Japanese".

Toronto copied these signs, too, kiiti. They have been very helpful there in distinguishing streetcar stops from bus stops.

An interesting sign. Thinking about what I'd want to know if I was catching a bus, would be "is this a stop for the bus route I want to take"? This tells me there are 4 routes using the stop, but not which routes they may be. Maybe Sig would have a view about that. :-)

John FitzGerald club has replied to tiabunna club
There's only one route at this stop, George -- route 4. They could have painted out the S. Should have, if they had wanted it to be clear.

What would Sig say? I'm sure he'd make something out of how in German the word for 4 is pronounced the same as the English word fear. Well, Tony Robbins might, at least.
