Waverley

Waverley
Another example of the architectural aesthetic of my new neighbourhood. This is Waverley, built for Charles F. Goodhue in the 1880s. The original architect was Capt. Hamilton Tovey, a Briton who was Goodhue's uncle, but the plans were extensively modified by local architect George F. Durand. It is now a retirement home.

Charles's father George was quite the lad. Here's a link to an article about him from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography:

www.biographi.ca/en/bio/goodhue_george_jervis_9E.html

This is probably best viewed on black. Type Z to see if you agree.

Lovely architecture, John. The colour of the building contrasts perfectly with the colour of the sky. All the best, Joe

Thanks, Joe. Many of the older buildings here are in very attractive yellow brick.

Nicely captured John...............and a beautiful old house that has stood the test of time.

I enjoyed reading the history in the link you thoughtfully provided, particularly how Goodhue bought his way into the upper House.................who say's history is not relevant to the present day?

Thanks, Keith. Goodhue was just making a corrupt process more efficient (and obvious), I think. He was on the good guys' side, at least.

Several of the older grand houses have survived here, Esther. And many grand churches of the period. Actually, this house and Idlewyld are on Grand Avenue.

A great house here in a very traditional style. Looks like it makes a fine retirement home and I do hope that the staff are as good as the fabric here. Very well captured.
Incidentally, I have a relative who lives in London Ontario too so its nice to see shots from his home town here.

Cheers from Oldham, UK. Herb

Thanks, Herb. The pre-WWII parts of this city are highly attractive, but there has been so little sun that I haven't taken many photos. There's sun today but it's coming through haze, so it's not your usual winter quality.

Another lovely SW Ont yellow brick home. I really don't know why yellow bricks are so rare here in the East; it's what I love best about visiting the SW, all the churches, town halls, houses with them... :)
