One of the few things I've learned in my long life, Keith, is that sophistication is the enemy of enjoyment. For example, I was happy drinking the store-brand dark roast I made in the morning until I saw a video on YouTube about coffee roasts and realized that what I was drinking had no taste other then the typical carbon flavour of dark roasts. I hadn't noticed that before, but now I had managed to put myself off this brand I'd been drinking for years. I still haven't settled on a substitute. With music it's even worse. My taste got so sophisticated that now I can't enjoy any music at all. Not up to my standards.

This place is OK. I just order the light drip coffee, which is quite good. There is, however, the typical knot of people hanging around waiting for their lattes etc. The gallery is some big wildlife photos on the walls. But it's bright and airy, and yesterday sitting outside in the sun was pleasant.

But yeah, I wouldn't mind going back to the days of the one-armed joint where you bought a coffee and a doughnut and they brought it to you. And you could have a chat with the staff. Chain coffee shops did away with counters, table service, and comfortable chairs to encourage people to leave quickly, or leave altogether and drink their coffee elsewhere.

Feh, I say. Feh.

I grew up in era of abominable Canadian restaurant tea, Keith. I think most people of my generation think the same way. When I was a child, restaurants served tea in little china pots. Everybody stole them, though, so they were replaced by leaky metal pots. Which of course produced abominable tea.

In the last few years specialty tea shops have sprung up, but once bitten twice shy.
