Heading off for a couple of days, and my ipernity app on my smartphone doesn't let me do much, if anything, so am not ignoring your posts.

Streetcars turn at this corner, Bob, which explains the fan of wires and, I think, the resemblance to a ride. I'm not impressed with the app, either.

They are now building a tram line here at Tampere, but it is still unclear to me how and where they are going to hang the over-head wires. All the nice plan pictures only show the main power line magically hanging above the tram but none of the supporting wires or poles. Well, I guess the time will tell... =D

I see from Google Street View that Tampere seems not to have overhead power lines, so that should make things simple. Here the streetcar wires are often strung from the hydro poles, our quaint term for the poles for power lines. That means the transit commission and Toronto Hydro maintenance schedules may conflict. Which, in true Canadian fashion, no one worries about.

Which raises the question, how do you repair the power lines in winter? Here repairing the water mains in winter requires jackhammers, as I found out one Sunday morning at four o'clock.

I will never love overhead wires as they too often mar a beautiful view of our city, but I agree that by themselves they can be put to interesting photographic uses.

Part of the difference may be the milder slopes in Toronto, Sarah. Downtown is on the bed of a glacial lake from the last Ice Age, which slopes slowly up to an escarpment that marks the edge of the old lake. So I should think the wires get in the way less often, and you don't get extensive views till you go up the escarpment.

I never thought about that difference and you may be partially right. Needs more exploring .....

"Always remember to look up" was a piece of excellent advice given to me by a photographer friend. You never know what you might find.

It takes a while to work this perspective out John, especially as your traffic lights are so different to ours, which threw me a bit. I like all the different geometric shapes against the sky! A man-made version of a spider's web....................

A fellow in Newcastle Upon Tyne told a bunch of us who were attending a conference there that only children appreciated the beauty of Grey Street, because they were the only people to look above the shops. I was so impressed by what I saw when looking up as a kid, though, that I just kept on doing it. And Grey Street is beautiful. There are things other than the big mall that justify a visit to Newcastle.

Other provinces and states here have even stranger traffic lights, namely horizontal ones. They have been shown to be more dangerous than the vertical ones, but they insist on using them.

That's an impressive shot of intersection stuff, John! And to think that it's nothing compared to so many other places. You've got the composition right. (I agree about Ip on my phone, but I don't use an ap. Didn't know there was one.)
