1821 erklärte Mexiko seine Unabhängigkeit von der spanischen Krone. Zu dieser Zeit kehrte Benigno Barbadillo und kaufte in Sanlúcar de Barrameda ein Weingut. Er kreirte den Manzanilla und stellte auch Sherrys her. Als er 1827 seine Weine nach Amerika exportierte, begann die rasche Entwicklung zu einem der zehn größten und ältesten Familienunternehmen in Spanien.
