A rainy day and evening brought me to a street corner to take photos to celebrate World Photography Day. I've always loved rain wet streets and traffic lights, especially when a light turns red. I'm reminded of one of my favourite Dylan Thomas poems, with the lines ... "I liked to walk through the wet town after midnight, when the streets were deserted and the window lights out, alone and alive on the glistening tramlines in dead and empty High Street under the moon ... " On a practical note, all the road markings and colours are for our new bike paths.

Es ist ein heißer Tag. Ich gehe erst am Abend raus, wenn die Sonne schon ganz tief steht. Der Anblick von Gräsern im Abendlicht gehört für mich zu den schönsten Momenten in der Natur.

O O O O O O O O Wassermelone Als ich zum ersten Mal von dieser, damals exotischen, Frucht erfahren hatte, war ich von ihrem wunderbaren roten Fruchtfleisch und dem Geschmack begeistert. Jetzt werden diese Früchte auch in Deutschland angebaut, weil das Klima dafür günstig ist. Die Früchte werden als erfrischendes und durstlöschendes Gemüse gegessen. In der Kalahari und anderen Trockengebieten Afrikas war sie jahrhundertelang eine wichtige Wasserquelle für die Menschen. Meist werden die Früchte roh verspeist, in Afrika manchmal auch gekocht. Die Rinde kann eingelegt oder kandiert werden. In den südlichen Gebieten der früheren Sowjetunion wird der Saft der Früchte zu einem alkoholischen Getränk vergoren oder zu einem süßen Sirup eingekocht. Die Samen werden in Indien gemahlen und zu Brot gebacken. Im Nahen und Mittleren Osten werden die Samen geröstet gegessen. In China, wo die Nutzung der Samen im Vordergrund steht, wurden Sorten mit extragroßen Samen gezüchtet. Aus den Samen kann zudem das hauptsächlich als Kosmetikzusatz, sowie seltener als Salatöl und Lampenöl genutzte Ootangaöl bzw. Wassermelonenkernöl gewonnen werden. Hopefully, I did correctly read that it's okay to add photos to 'World Photography Day' until the end of August as long as the photo was taken on 19th :-) On 19th it was quite dull and overcast and I thought I would wait until the sun made an appearance before heading out. It wasn't looking promising so late in the afternoon I walked into town hoping the light would be okay. I was struggling to find a subject and realised the, so called, 'Blue Leanie' building was undergoing alteration/renovation and I thought I ought to be able to find a photo opportunity here. I'm sure there are better photo opportunities here once the alterations/renovation are complete and I will be trying more shots when all is complete and the sun shines :-))) Part of the complex does lean at an acute angle hence the 'Blue Leanie' title but clearly not this section that I photographed :-)

The wattle trees are flowering, signalling that the end of winter is near. As might be expected, the bees are active, but it wasn't until I viewed this on the screen that I also saw the little caterpillar (note). With all this life around, this seems well suited to World Photography Day for 2025.

Es befindet sich im Fluss Etel auf der kleinen Insel Nichtarguer, einem winzigen Landstreifen, auf dem 1894 das Haus des Wächters der Austernzuchtanlage erbaut wurde. Heute ist es unbewohnt und nach dem Haus von Plougrescant in der Nordbretagne das am häufigsten fotografierte Haus der Bretagne.
