Beartooth Scenic Byway MT (#0515)

The Beartooth (US-212), runs along the Montana/Wyoming border, swinging down into Wyoming and then back into Montana, and then back to Wyoming over at Yellowstone. At this point on the trip I was actually headed west on the road into Wyoming, but turned around to take a picture of the Montana sign (prettier than Wyoming's).

Near the summit of the Beartooth, in Wyoming. It was difficult here to capture perspective, the picture is easily misinterpreted. The snowbanks just above the lake are further away than they might look -- a half mile. (Looks better in Lightbox)

As in the adjacent picture, its easy to misjudge distances here -- the large lakes are a mile away.

Descending from the summit. In the largest version of the picture you can see that there is a highway bridge across the lakes and then that the highway extends up into the ridge in the distance.

Plaque describing later year operations at the Aladdin, WY coal mine. In the early years the mine provided coal for industry, but the supply dwindled and the mine then provided coal for domestic heating and cooking. The mine stopped operating in the early 1940's.

The hoist house at the Aladdin, WY coal mine. Originally coal was brought out by mule-drawn, but a later addition used a truck motor and chain operation to bring the cars out. The truck chassis is visible in the shed.
