SF Winter Solstice Union Square (1469)

San Francisco local

Folder: California
The parts of San Francisco that have been an integral part of my life. The areas where much of who I am, developed. My first visit to San Francisco was in 1967, when I was in the military. I've been in and out of the city ever since, having lived there from 1983 to 1996 and continuing to have personal and professional contacts there that facilitate regular visits. The city was very important…  (read more)

SF waterfront 4th St Bridge homeless 0209

Interesting sign from a homeless man's cart, asking for a copy of Windows operating system. When I saw him he was recharging his Thinkpad at a public electricity outlet, and was in need of a copy of Windows to re-install on it.

Fourth (4th) street bridge in San Francisco. Plaque describing the seismic retrofitting of the bridge which indicates that the massive weight in the neaby pictures is actually much smaller than was originally used for the bridge -- the majority of the counterweight is now buried.

I could find very little documentation on this bridge. The bridge is on Third street over Islais Creek, the bridge is also referred to as the Levon Hapag Nishkian Bridge, but I could find no documentation as to why it is named that or about its design. Though the design of the bridge is simple, it resembles Streamline Moderne architecture (it was built in 1945.) In the foreground are tracks for the Muni T (3rd street) line that were added recently.

What appear to be the weights or mechanism for lifting the center span of the bridge. What was impressive here was the design put into this component. (see comments on bridge in adjacent picture)

Pelican with Illinois street bridge over Islais Creek and an abandoned terminal in the background. Islais Creek once originated from Twin Peaks and flowed almost 8 miles to the Bay. Remnants of the creek can be found in Glen Canyon Park, but mostly there is just a short channel on the waterfront that is less than a mile in length.
