Magdalena, west of Socorro, on US 60. It was a small ranch and mining town, with active ranches around the area and some mines that appeared to be still active. Enough activity to support a couple of businesses. Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.

Mogollon, NM (3332)

Former mining town of Mogollon, NM. As in many other parts of New Mexico, there are some artists and other people living in the old town. The first time I was there there was only a small bakery (very good) and one general store open. The second time I was there, no businesses were open. I may not have seen any artist studios because both visits were mid-week. Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.

One goal on my second visit to Mogollon was to visit its cemetery. On the climb to the cemetery is this abandoned mine settlement -- the same settlement seen from the earlier picture of mine tailings. The structures in the settlement looked well-preserved, but the settlement was fenced off with multiple warnings against trespassing -- so this is as close as I could get.

Towards the top the road to Mogollon gets very narrow, has no guard rails, and no room to pull over. The two times I've driven the route, I've encountered no other cars. Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.

An unusual tablet -- the details of the script are in the adjacent picture in the New Mexico set.

Mogollon, NM cemetery (153)

17 Jun 2008 232
The Mogollon cemetery is a couple of miles higher above the town and accessible by a rough road -- the road turned out to be too rough for my car, but the almost 600' climb (in close to 100 degree heat) turned out to be worth it. The entrance to the cemetery is clearly a relatively new addition. The sign over the top says "Mogollon Cemetery 1890." Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.

Mogollon, NM cemetery 148a

The cemetery looks to be largely untended, though clearly there are some newer plots that are tended (e.g., the one on the right in the adjacent picture with the main gate). Very many graves had no markers other than a ring of stones, and very many of the markers seemed to have been handcrafted locally with available materials.

Restored Shaffer Hotel -- the inside is very nicely restored. Note the swastikas, which were commonly used in various Native American cultures prior to the use of the symbol by the Nazis. Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.
