Monticello/Jefferson County Courthouse (#0577)
Jefferson County Courthouse in Monticello, Fl., built in 1909. One of the great advantages to driving the old US-90, which runs roughly parallel to I-10, are the reminders of a time when rural county seats were important centers of the universe for the surrounding areas, very often their importance being indicated by the courthouse being literally in the center of the highway.

Saw a bit of that in Red Cloud, NE, while hearing about Willa Cather's career. Local centers were much more important when you couldn't just hop in the car and go somewhere else!

I've been commenting more in the past couple of years on the former importance of the smaller cities and towns in the 'hinterlands'. I think it's an issue that's way too much overlooked.
