A comparable one-bedroom apartment in what I suspect is a comparable Chicago neighborhood (South Loop) would probably go for about half the low-end.

It does seem more like Manhattan prices. From what I remember of Chicago, that's close. I stayed at the Travelodge on Harrison once years ago and the area between there and the jail seemed similar to this area.

As you may have gathered, I'm _not_ a city person--I can't imagine wanting to live in such an area in the first place, much less at those prices! I get claustrophobic...

I definitely can't see paying those prices. I've lived in inner city neighborhoods with no problems, but I have to have a place where there's a relatively long vista and nearby green space. In that particular part of SF, there's no green space that's easy to use and walk to.
