Remains of what was once the very busy SF waterfront. This immediate area has been referred to as 'Dogpatch' since WWII (there is no explanation for the name).

Per Wikipedia the name predates WWII (as does Al Capp's strip), but two popular theories are that the name either came from a particular weed (dogfennel) that was common there or because the area once had very many abandoned dogs.
