Staten Island Ferry

Staten Island Ferry
Though I never lived there, NYC became an integral part of my years in the Northeast. And, an integral part of NYC, was riding the Staten Island ferry -- riding the ferry and seeing the port traffic seemed to be a key part of my regaining the sense of the city as a center of international commerce.

My gf when I was in grad school at Stony Brook in the late 70s was from Staten Island--

So, did you take the time to study the geology of Staten Island? From the little wandering I've done around the hills on the island, it looks to have an interesting geological history.

No specific study, but IIRC from the general geologic setting it--like Manhattan--is high-grade metamorphic rock from the early Paleozoic Taconic orogeny, reflecting a continental collision and mountain-building event at that time. It's very different from Long Island, which is a big pile of recent glacial debris. The northern part of LI is an end moraine from the Laurentide ice sheet, and the flat middle and southern parts are the outwash plain. This, btw, is why LI is _not_ a good site for skyscrapers!

In other words, Long Island is what it looks like, a very large (and very old and built up) sandbar! (That's my geologically simple understanding).
