There's a site somewhere that says it was among the first air cooled big buildings in the state, but doesn't specific how it was cooled.

We had swamp (evaporative) coolers when I was stationed in west Texas in the 60's. Didn't realize AC predated EC. In Palm Springs we have both since you can use EC until we start getting a monsoonal flow (that's what it is called) and it gets too humid (usually later August and September).
