Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge -- how the dredge worked and the destructiveness of such mining is described in the picture of the placards that are part of this group of pictures. The dredge was closed when I was there and was being repainted.

Wandering around in the dredgelands is a pretty depressing experience. At least the ponds between the cobble heaps are havens for waterfowl!

I agree, the dredgelands seem to epitomize the 'rape of nature' -- but then a few minutes near a huge open pit like Round Mountain gives a better view of disaster. In a sick way, I'd like to see what's happening at the tar sands in Alberta.
