It's interesting to me the way the look of this part of California became something of the generic aesthetic of rural America because of the way Hollywood and television used it. Pop culture is full of scenes like this. I've only been through this region once, but I'll likely go back in about a month.

I've been in Southern California since '96 and quickly began to realize how much of movie and TV background that was purportedly portraying some place in the east, was actually shot in Southern California. Parts of the "Song of Bernadette" which is based in Lourdes, France, were shot in Griffith Park (LA).

I have this ongoing joke with my significant other whenever I see something obviously filmed in the hills of Southern California that it looks remarkably like Korea. My idea of Korea, of course, is based entirely on episodes of M.A.S.H. Korea, oddly enough, also looks a lot like Georgia, at least as seen on "The Dukes of Hazzard." California was for the longest time visual chicken ... every place looked like it.

Took me awhile to get that 'visual chicken' metaphor (i.e., that the standard phrase for mystery meat was "tastes like chicken"). Sherwood Forest, along with parts of Star Trek and Sky King, and many others, were all in Simi Valley, just northwest of Hollywood. A friends Flickr photos cover that well:
