  • It is a tight squeeze, but they're soft
  • They then climb the trunk of the nearest tree
  • Their wings start to extend
  • Still inflating
  • The inflation continues
  • Some begin to crawl away from their shells
  • They develop color within the first hour or so
  • But carpenter ants interrupt the process for some
  • The shell is left behind
  • More ants join the party
  • Soon, they're dragging away the pieces
  • The nymphs dig themselves out of the ground
  • They split their shells down the back
  • Almost ready

  • But the vast majority  make it all the way
  • They're harmless, and kind of cute
  • Ready to fly, mate, and die
