What goes on here?

This beetle, under a quarter-inch long, is of a species I've never seen before, but what's remarkable to me is the orange business under its shell. Eggs? Parasites? Maybe an example of the anguish of insect obesity? The coloration suggests a beetle that wants some predator to think of it as a large ant, perhaps a velvet ant.
