Ipswich Buses Ltd

Folder: East Anglian buses and coaches
Ipswich Buses is one of the few remaining council owned bus companies in Britain. The origins of the company go back to 1903 when the Corporation began operating trams in the town. For many years trolleybuses reigned supreme, the first delivered in 1923 and the last which entered service in June 1950 one month after the first motor bus enetred the fleet. From Tower Ramparts bus station the service travels via Portman Road, Constantine Road, Russell Road and Princes Street back into the town centre. In addition to serving the residential area in this part of town it fulfils the role of providing transport between the town centre and the Constantine Road garage for Ipswich Buses staff and for Suffolk County Council staff and visitors to/from Endeavour House, Russell Road. Inside the doorway is Alexander ALX400 bodied Dennis Trident 20 (Y436 NHK) new to Stagecoach East London in August 2001 (fleet number TAS436).

Sunday 27 May 2018 (1055) – This former Ipswich Buses Neepsend bodied AEC Regent V has stood on private land near Hockwold for some years. I had never stopped to photograph it before but now I have I find the registration number has faded somewhat coupled with the fact that there is something propped up against the front that makes it more difficult to read. It is one of the four buses delivered in January 1966 numbered 65-68 with matching DPV xxD registrations. From memory I seem to recall it may be 68 (DPV 68D).

A closer photograph and more detailed description can be found via this link: www.ipernity.com/doc/davidslater-spoddendale/46963308 The garage was established to house the fleet of Ipswich Corporation and does so now for Ipswich Buses, a descendant of Ipswich Corporation. The Corporation operated trams in its early days but by 1923 was experimenting with trolleybuses on a route from Cornhill in the town centre and the railway station, a distance of about 0.75 mile/1.2 km. The trolleybus route was successful and after the trams ceased running in 1926 the Corporation chose the trolleybus exclusively for its service network. It was as late as 1950 before the first motor bus joined the fleet although trolleybuses continued to run until August 1963.
