Wednesday 16 August 2023 – Mercedes-Benz Intouro bus seen in Via Stazione, Dobbiaco/Toblach, South Tirol, Italy. (Dobbiaco in the Italian language/Toblach in German). In this north eastern region of Italy, which abuts neighbouring Austria – the border is about 13km/8 miles to the east) the main spoken languages are Italian and German together with Ladin. Services in the region are organised by ‘sta’ which has a name in the three languages – südtirolmobil; alto adige mobilità; südtirolmubiltà all carried with a partial ‘M’ logo on the vehicles. Destination displays are shown in the two main languages. This bus would more than likely be operated by a contractor on behalf of sta – quite possibly Cortina Express based in Cortina Anpezzo. It was working service 445 bound for Cortina Anpezzo, a journey taking 50 minutes operating six times a day. Destination displays are bi-lingual. It just so happens that the destination for this bus is the same in both languages so is shown twice! The building in the background is the Hotel Union just a short walk from the railway station which is behind the camera. (Photo courtesy of Jane Slater)

(This trip inbound I believe). The overall journey takes 28 minutes and operates hourly (increased to half hourly between mid-June and late September). Such is the popularity of this service during the peak summer months of July, August and September that it is necessary to make a reservation and pay for tickets in advance. Setra bus at Passo Falzarego - 20 Aug 2023 (JLS11)…

30 Aug 2023 2 108
Sunday 20 August 2023 - Passo Falzarego is a high mountain pass in the Dolomites mountain range in the South Tirol region of north east Italy over which crosses the Great Dolomites Road (SS48). The region borders Austria with the main spoken languages in the area being Italian and German together with Ladin. During World War 1 the steep rock faces were the scene of heavy fighting between Austria and Italy. Between 1915 and 1917 the area around the Pass was a no man’s land between the front lines of the opposing armies. A memorial to this conflict stands on the rocks close to the cable car station for the link to Lagazuoi mountain. The only other buildings at the summit house a couple of catering establishments, the larger of which is also a shop. The road is impassable in winter but during summer the pass is very popular with visitors and is the meeting point of some regular route bus services. Buses from the east and south of the pass include Dolomitibus SpA which is owned by the Province of Belluno. Buses from the west are operated by contractors working for ‘sta’ – the authority which organises the transport network in that region and has a name in the three languages südtirolmobil; alto adige mobilità; and südtirolmubiltà. Buildings and vehicles carry the three names with a partial ‘M’ logo. Service 465 which operates from Carvara to St.Kassian/San Cassiano all year round extends to Passo Falzarego from mid-June to the end of September. This Setra bus (wearing the ‘sta’ livery possibly operated by Cortina Express) is seen during a short break just before returning to Carvara, a journey of 45 minutes. (Photo by Jane Slater- JLS11)
