Saturday 25 May 2019 – Preserved NRN 586, an MCW bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 that was new to Ribble Motor Services as their 1686 in October 1960. It was seen in Lancaster bus station when running a shuttle service to the Stagecoach North West garage open day at Morecambe. The event, and the Ribble Vehicle Preservation Trust 'Morecambe Vintage Bus Day' held in Morecambe the next day, were to celebrate 100 years of Ribble Motor Services. The Atlantean was perhaps one of the most revolutionary designs. The rear engine layout paved the way for the buses we know almost 60 years later. As a schoolboy when these buses were delivered to Ribble they were the epitome of modernity to an impressionable ten year old bus enthusiast! I was successful in securing a ride on the next trip to Morecambe – just had to.
