USAF hospital buses 67B 1950 and 79B 5929 at RAF Lakenheath - 4 Jul 1982 1

Sunday 4 July 1982 – In addition to using this style of vehicle as hospital buses based at RAF Lakenheath, the United States Air Force also had a number of similar style vehicles based at RAF Mildenhall for general use. This pair were seen parked at the Base Hospital at RAF Lakenheath. Each Thursday a USAF ‘Nightingale’ aircraft (a military hospital variant of the McDonnell-Douglas DC9) came in to RAF Mildenhall and just before its arrival one of these hospital buses could be seen passing through Mildenhall town centre on its journey from the RAF Lakenheath Hospital to RAF Mildenhall. To give the patients a smoother, safer ride the buses did not travel via Eriswell and Holywell Row but used the A1065 and A1101 instead. Left 67B 1950 (new 1967) and 79B 5929 (new 1979).
