Gleichheit ist eine Hauptstütze der Billigkeit.
Und wer hat sich zu beklagen,
wenn gleichen Brüdern gleiche Kappen zugeschnitten werden?

The (old) French text is :
L’equalité est la premiere piece de l’equité. Qui se peut plaindre d’estre comprins où tous sont comprins ?
Essais, I, 19, Que philosopher, c’est apprendre a mourir.
Which I translate in my poor English :
Equality is the first piece of equity. Who can complain of being concerned by something that concerns everyone ?
The caps seem to be from the German translator, though Montaigne loved images, too. And if you copy-paste the German quote to Google Translate it into French, Kappen is understood as “buttons”. Sometimes Google Translate seems to be improving, then it drops down again.
