Speierling mit gar seltsamen Früchtchen - Sorb tree with rather strange little fruits
4 cm), bunten, apfelähnliche Früchte in Massen trugen.

During a hike, I discovered a plantation of trees bearing these relatively small (max. 4 cm), colourful, apple-like fruits in masses. However, the fruits are not fruits of the apple tree (Malus domestica), but of a sorb tree (Sorbus domestica), which can also be recognised by the leaflets. The fruits are absolutely inedible, but they used to be added to cider as juice for better preservation. Today, the sorb tree is often planted in mixed forests as a "climate tree". The wood of the tree is often used for various purposes because it is extraordinarily hard (see wikipedia article).
