Das höchste Verwaltungsgericht der Türkei hat am 10. Juli 2020 entschieden, dass die Hagia Sofia (Ayasofia) in eine Moschee umgewandelt werden darf. Seit heute (24.07.20) wird sie muslimisch genutzt. Das monumentale Bauwerk und architektonische Meisterwerk wurde im 6. Jahrhundert nach Christus vom byzantinischen Kaiser Justinian errichtet und als die Osmanen Konstantinopel 1453 eroberten, wurde die Hagia Sofia vom Sultan Mehmed II. in eine Moschee verwandelt. Der Gründer der modernen Türkei, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, machte aus der Hagia Sofia 1935 ein Museum. Die moderne Türkei sei ein säkulares Land, lautete die Botschaft von damals. Insofern hat die heutige Umwandlung in eine Moschee große politische Bedeutung. Zwar kann die Hagia Sofia weiterhin (jetzt sogar kostenlos) außerhalb der viermaligen täglichen Gebetszeiten besichtigt werden, ob dann allerdings die vielen christlichen Mosaiken und Symbole sichtbar sein werden, ist sehr ungewiss. Ob der UNESCo-Welterbe Status erhalten bleiben kann, ist noch unklar.

The highest administrative court of Turkey decided on 10 July 2020 that the Hagia Sofia (Ayasofia) may be converted into a mosque. Since today (24.07.20) it is used by Muslims. The monumental building and architectural masterpiece was built in the 6th century AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian and when the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, the Hagia Sofia was transformed into a mosque by Sultan Mehmed II. The founder of modern Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, turned the Hagia Sofia into a museum in 1935. Modern Turkey was a secular country, was the message of that time. In this respect, today's transformation into a mosque has great political significance. Although the Hagia Sofia can still be visited (now even free of charge) outside the four times daily prayer times, it is very uncertain whether the many Christian mosaics and symbols will be visible then. It is not yet clear whether the UNESCo World Heritage status can be maintained.
