During June in a Franconian nature reserve in Thüngersheim am Main the bee orchid (Ophrys apifera) is blooming, a rare orchid species that is very threatened. Therefore it was elected in 1995 to the Orchid of the Year.
Ophrys apifera is as most of the Ophrys species a marriage impostor, because the lower lip of the flower is aligned with the body of the pollinator in shape and color and is similar in the case of the bee orchid a number of wild bee species. For example, male long-horned bees have been observed, when trying to copulate with a bee orchid bloom on the lower lip of the flower. Here a whole pollen packet (the so-called pollinia) is pasted on the back of the insect, which then may immediately transport it to the next Ophry bloom. However the indigenous Ophrys apifera practise mostly self-pollination.

Gruss Luscinia
