Wishing everyone a pleasant second half of the week... with a picture of a wall in the Castillo de San Fernando (Castell de Sant Ferran) in Alicante.

The Castillo de San Fernando (Valencian: 'Castell de Sant Ferran'), a castle in Alicante*, named after Ferdinand VII (wikipedia ...Ferdinand_VII), was built during the War of Independence against the French in 1813.
The castle was built as a prison and to reinforce the defensive capabilities of the neighboring Santa Bárbara Castle, but was never put into service because there was no French garrison in Alicante. (When the actual attack on the city was about to begin, the French troops were recalled to France, as they were needed for the invasion of Russia.)
In 1939, Franco's troops used the fortress as a concentration camp to house Republican prisoners.
