Im ganzen Land sind immer wieder scheinbar endlose Lupinen-Felder anzutreffen. Lupinen, in Island nicht heimisch, wurden im 20. Jahrhundert eingeführt, um die Bodenerosion ein den Griff zu bekommen. Das Projekt ist heute umstritten, sie verdrängen einheimische Pflanzenarten und sie eignen sich nicht als Futterpflanze, da sie zu viele Bitterstoffe (Alkaloide) enthalten.
