Fort Phil Kearny was a US Army fort during the late 1860's Indian wars. Indians led by Chief Red Cloud attacked settlers who were travelling over the Bozeman Trail. This fort and two others were constructed in an unscucessful attempt to protect the settlers. Eventually it was abandoned as part of the Treaty of Laramie in 1868, and a band of Cheyenne burned it to the ground. By all accounts it was a miserable place to be posted with disease and constant harassement from Indian warriors.

Very evocative, particularly with the snow, and making a fine landscape. This brings back memories of the Wild West movies, with all the Indians in line appearing over the hilltop...
