Location of flagpole at Fort Phil Kearny
Fort Phil Kearny was a US Army fort during the late 1860's Indian wars. Indians led by Chief Red Cloud attacked settlers who were travelling over the Bozeman Trail. This fort and two others were constructed in an unscucessful attempt to protect the settlers. Eventually it was abandoned as part of the Treaty of Laramie in 1868, and a band of Cheyenne burned it to the ground. By all accounts it was a miserable place to be posted with disease and constant harassement from Indian warriors.

Arikara Indian Gravestones, Little Bighorn National Monument
Site of the greatest defeat of US forces in the Indian Wars - general George Armstrong Custer lost his life and 5 of the 7th Cavalry's regiments were completely annihilated. It was a major victory for the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapahoe Indians.
These gravesites belong to Arikara Indian scouts who served in the US Army.
