Villanders am Rande des Eisacktals - HFF
Villanders (italienisch Villandro) ist eine Gemeinde mit 1875 Einwohnern (Stand 31. Dezember 2018) in Südtirol (Italien). Sie befindet sich im Eisacktal oberhalb von Klausen. Villanders erstreckt sich von den Weingärten des Eisacktales über das sanfte Wandergebiet der Villanderer Alm hinauf zum Villanderer Berg.
Eine Straße mit zehn Kehren führt von Klausen ins Villanderer Dorfzentrum. Es liegt auf einer Meereshöhe von 880 m. Das Gemeindegebiet beginnt auf einer Meereshöhe von 491 m und reicht bis zum Gipfel des Villanderer Berges auf 2509 m Höhe. Die Gemeinde besteht aus den drei Fraktionen St. Stefan, St. Moritz und St. Valentin, deren natürliche Grenzen Bäche und Schluchten bilden, die den Berghang von Villanders fast senkrecht durchbrechen (Thinnebach, Plabach, Mühlbach und Zargenbach).
Villanders wird ersturkundlich in den Gründungsaufzeichnungen von Stift Sonnenburg im Pustertal im Jahr 1039 als „Filandres“ genannt. 1085 erscheint es bereits als „Filanders“, später als „Vilanders“ oder „Vylanders“.
Die Herkunft des Ortsnamens Villanders, ladinisch auch Ulándres, konnte bis heute nicht restlos geklärt werden, er wird jedoch aufgrund seines Suffixes – wie bei Schlanders – auf vorrömische Ursprünge zurückgeführt (ähnlich wie beim benachbarten Verdings und Feldthurns). Andere Sprachforscher versuchten römische Wurzeln ausfindig zu machen (z. B. „villa antrorum“ oder „valles antri“). In Villanders selbst kursiert die – mit Sicherheit ins Reich der Sagen gehörende – Erzählung, der Ort habe früher auch „Schönberg“ geheißen, wäre jedoch von einem Erdrutsch verwüstet worden und habe nachher „viel anders“ ausgesehen.
