Im Jahr 1516, als in Bayern das Reinheitsgebot für Bier erlassen wurde, stellte Franz von Taxis die 1. regelmäßige, verlässliche Postverbindung von Wien nach Brüssel her. Damals brachten übrigens reitende Boten die Post auf den Weg. Auch die Nachkommen des Fürstengeschlechts von Thurn und Taxis waren Postmeister.
Es liegt nahe, den Ursprung des Namens Taxi in eben dieser Postunternehmer-Familie zu suchen. Denn auch Personen wurden später von einem Ort zum anderen gebracht. Aber: Das Taxi stammt von dem lateinischen Wort taxa ab. Das Verb taxare bedeutet: feststellen oder schätzen, welchen Wert eine Sache hat. Als taxa mit dem Wort Meter verknüpft wurde, entstand der Taxameter, der den Fahrpreis einer Droschke maß. In Frankreich hieß der Gebührenzähler taximètre, in England taximeter. Hierzulande setzte sich irgendwann die Kurzform Taxi durch.
