The reader and the musician standing in front of the Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino. The Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino is an Italian national library and former university library in Turin. King Victor Amadeus II founded the Regia Biblioteca Universitaria in 1720 and in 1873 the library was granted the status of a national library. By the end of the century it had about 250,000 volumes, 4,200 manuscripts and 1,000 incunabula in its possession. On January 26, 1904, a fire destroyed 30,000 books and half of the manuscripts, including some very valuable ones, which were also lost during the Second World War, during which the old library building was destroyed. Between 1958 and 1973 the Marstall of Palazzo Carignano was converted into the new library building.

The church of San Lorenzo is an extraordinary central building of Baroque architecture, built according to the plans of the Theatine Father Guarino Guarini, who was the learned philosopher, mathematician and architect between 1667 and 1680. The church was consecrated in 1680, but the construction of the façade, the choir and the interior fittings dragged on until the 18th century. The Theatine convent was dissolved in 1802.
