The Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria di Torino is an Italian national library and former university library in Turin. King Victor Amadeus II founded the Regia Biblioteca Universitaria in 1720 and in 1873 the library was granted the status of a national library. By the end of the century it had about 250,000 volumes, 4,200 manuscripts and 1,000 incunabula in its possession. On January 26, 1904, a fire destroyed 30,000 books and half of the manuscripts, including some very valuable ones, which were also lost during the Second World War, during which the old library building was destroyed. Between 1958 and 1973 the Marstall of Palazzo Carignano was converted into the new library building.

The tram of Turin is one of the main carriers of public transport. Turin has the oldest tram network in Italy, the first horse-drawn trams were in operation as early as 1871. The church of San Lorenzo is an extraordinary central building of Baroque architecture, built according to the plans of the Theatine Father Guarino Guarini, who was the learned philosopher, mathematician and architect between 1667 and 1680. The church was consecrated in 1680, but the construction of the façade, the choir and the interior fittings dragged on until the 18th century. The Theatine convent was dissolved in 1802.

In the roofscape of the dome, which is an extraordinary construction, the mosque-like influences on the building can be seen, which the architect had inspired on his travels, and with the crossing ribs he probably alludes to the grate on which St. Lawrence was martyred to death.

Piazza Palazzo di Città (Town Hall Square) A small square in the heart of the city that houses the Palazzo Civico, the seat of the local administration. The square is also known as "Piazza delle Erbe" (Herbs' Square), and there are regularly some stalls selling agricultural and food products.

Piazza della Repubblica / Porta Palazzo market The market in the octagonal Piazza della Repubblica, just a few steps from the centre, has its origins in the distant past, it is the largest market in the city, and the largest open market in Europe, a tourist destination and the centre of market activity in Turin. A visit to the market immerses you in a world of colours, flavours, traditions and cultures. This unusual mix of cultures has its origins in the past, and this area has always been the meeting point of the various waves of migration that have hit Turin over the years, both from southern Italy and from abroad.

View of a part of the market place The large area of the Piazza della Repubblica allows the open-air market to exist side by side, with covered market halls dedicated to different product groups. In the open part of the square you can buy food, shoes, clothes, household goods, plants, fruit and vegetables. The open part also houses the famous Tettoia dei Contadini (Farmers' Market), where local producers sell their products.

In the covered four halls we find Fish market, Palatine centre, clothes and shoes, watch market ,food market and restaurants. A big attraction at Porta Palazzo is the famous flea market and antiques market that takes place every Saturday.

View through the Via della Basilica to the bell tower of Turin Cathedral The bell tower was built between 1468 and 1469. The windows with pointed arches are decorated with terracotta tiles. The bell tower was demolished in 1491, the bell tower partially collapsed, which cost the life of a passer-by.

Piazza Solferino / Fontana Angelica (Angelica Fountain) Piazza Solferino, in the historical centre of the city, takes its name from the city of Solferino in the province of Mantova, where in 1859 the Battle of Solferino took place, in which the French-Piedmontese troops defeated the Austrians in the second war of independence. The square, served as a wooden marketplace until the Napoleonic period. Fontana Angelica (Angelica Fountain) It was inaugurated on October 28, 1930, and is composed of four large statues that recall the four seasons.

Ferdinand of Savoy, Duke of Genoa Dedicated to the Duke of Genoa in 1877, cast in bronze. It depicts him with his drawn sword and wounded horse in memory of the Battle of Novara in 1849.
