St. Giles' Cathedral, known as High Kirk of Edinburgh, is the capital of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. The church tower is a feature of the Edinburgh skyline. The present church dates from the late 14th century, but was extensively restored in the 19th century and is a listed building. It is considered the "Mother Church of Presbyterianism". The cathedral was dedicated to Saint Giles, patron saint of Edinburgh, cripples and lepers.

The gatehouse / William Wallace
The castle on the volcanic stone hill offered protection with steep rock walls and the Nor' Loch. The gatehouse opposite the sloping Royal Mile was the most vulnerable point.
The gatehouse, with its imposing main entrance to the castle, was not built for defence but for aesthetic reasons. It replaced a simple 17th century gate.
Two bronze statues of two Scottish freedom fighters, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, flank the gate.
