The church of Villandry is dedicated to Saint Etienne, the first chapel of Saint Roch's chapel from the 5th century was destroyed around 1844. It is built on the hilltop, off the river Cher, out of danger of flooding.
A rectangular chapel measuring 9 m x 18 m was built in the 16th century. At the end of the 12th century the transept and the choir were added. The original chapel then became the nave of the new church.
