The first fortifications on the site of Paleo Frourio appeared in the 7th–8th centuries AD. The first defensive fortifications were created by the Byzantines at the beginning of the 8th century, and they also built the protective wall on the land side and dug the first ditch.

The Korission Lagoon is separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land. It is a bay that eventually took the shape of a lake. It is the largest lake and wetland on the island of Kerkyra (Corfu).
It is also of great importance due to the biological and aesthetic value of the sandy beaches. The southern sandy beach is home to unique red-fruited junipers and fossilized sand dunes.
