Bulgaria, Night View of Tiksim-tepe Hill in Plovdiv
Temple of Saint Archangels is visible on the top.
Plovdiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe. By 1200 BC, there was already a Thracian settlement here, named Eumolpia.
In 342 BC, the city was conquered by Philip II of Macedon, who named it Philippopolis in his own honor.
In 72 BC, Plovdiv was captured by the legions of the Roman general Marcus Terentius Varro Lucullus.
In 45 AD, the city became part of the Roman Empire (where it became the capital of the province of Thrace) and was named Trimontium ("City of Three Hills").
