2012 Koh Samui Moths
Folder: Far East
Some of the more interesting moths which we recorded at the Centara Villas Hotel during our stay there. Most were to our Travelling Net Trap, but a few were picked up in daylight or another light somewhere in the hotel. A good few still need identification, so if you can help, we'd be pleased to hear from you. My thanks to Ryan Brookes for helping with a number of the species in this set.

KS075 Eucyclodes semialba
| |
|
Geometridae, Geometrinae - Wingspan: 28mm.
A single specimen came to our trap on the 10th September. Typical of some Geometrids, this species tends to rest in the "butterfly" position with its wings closed over its back. This was the best picture that I could get, but the visible detail should be OK to check identities with.
KS076 Heterostegane subtessellata
| |
|
Geometridae, Ennominae - 26mm.
Two specimens came to our trap on the 10th September.
KS077 Comostola cedilla
| |
|
Geometridae, Geometrinae - Wingspan: 20mm.
A single specimen of this pretty little "Emerald" came to our trap on the 10th September.
KS078 Nemophora decisella
| |
|
Adelaide, Adelinae - Wingspan: 18mm.
A single specimen came to the trap on the 10th September.
Contrary to the warnings of "global warming" it looks like something different is getting around the Insect world, and some species seem to be preparing for the next "ice age" by growing winter warmers on their antennae! What a strange adaptation for this tropical moth from Thailand.
KS078 Nemophora decisella
| |
|
Adelidae, Adelinae - Wingspan: 18mm.
A single specimen came to the trap on the 10th September.
KS079 Tigrioides euchana
| |
|
Erebidae (Arctiidae), Arctiinae - Wingspan: 40mm.
A single specimen came to the trap on the 10th September.
KS080 Scopula voluptaria (form 2?)
| |
|
Geometridae, Sterrhinae - Wingspan : 22mm.
This appears to be a variation of KS024. A single specimen came in on the 10th.
KS081 Pyralid
KS082 Idaea macrospila
| |
|
Geometridae, Sterrhinae - Wingspan: 16mm.
Four individuals came to our trap: 2nd(1), 5th(1), and 10th(2). This species does not seem to be listed in the Boldsystems database under this Taxon, but it is listed in Wikipedia.
KS083 Orvasca subnotata
| |
|
Erebidae (Lymantriidae), Lymantriinae - Wingspan: 30mm.
Two specimens came to our trap on the 10th September. There seems to be considerable confusion with this family in the Oriental Region, as depending on who describes it, it can be placed in the Genus of Euproctis or Orvasca. Currently, Boldsystems and Wikipedia refer to this species under the Orvasca Genus, so I will follow their decision as it seems to be the most current identity.
KS084 Geometrid
| |
|
Geometridae, Ennominae? - Wingspan: 40mm.
A single specimen came in to the trap on the 10th September.
KS085 Cerynea contentaria
| |
|
|
Noctuidae, Acontiinae - Wingspan: 20mm.
A single specimen came to the trap on the 10th September. My thanks to Ryan, below, for the ID. However, I cannot find any indication that this Genus has been transferred to Erebidae, so have left it in the Noctuidae Family, which is still used in the Boldsystems and NHM databases, as well as in the Wikipedia reference. Currently, this species is not referred to in the Boldsystems database, but is listed in Wikipedia.
KS087 Trigonodes hyppasia
| |
|
Erebidae (Noctuidae), Erebinae - Wingspan: 34mm.
A single specimen came to our trap on the 12th.
KS088 Eilema sp.
| |
|
Erebidae (Arctiidae), Arctiinae - Wingspan: 26mm.
A single specimen arrived at our trap on the 12th September. Although not clear in this picture, the outer border of the forewings is slightly darker than the rest of the wing.
