2012 Koh Samui Moths
Folder: Far East
Some of the more interesting moths which we recorded at the Centara Villas Hotel during our stay there. Most were to our Travelling Net Trap, but a few were picked up in daylight or another light somewhere in the hotel. A good few still need identification, so if you can help, we'd be pleased to hear from you. My thanks to Ryan Brookes for helping with a number of the species in this set.

KS001 Hemithea tritonaria
| |
|
Geometridae. Wingspan: 20mm.
A small "Emerald". 5 were recorded at our Net Trap through our stay at this hotel.
KS002 Comibaena attenuata
| |
|
Geometridae. Wingspan: 24mm.
Another small "Emerald". Just one specimen was recorded during our stay at this hotel.
KS003 Semiothisa sps
| |
|
Geometridae Ennominae: W/s 24mm. Not sure which Genus of Semiothisa or Macaria has priority, as there are differing views. This species is very like a Neotropical Geometrid, Semiothisa everiata, so this might be a widespread species. It is not helped as this and the other species are both quite variable.
KS004 Idaea sps?
| |
|
Geometridae, Sterrhinae. Wingspan: 16mm.
As an alternative, this could be a specimen of Scopula lacriphaga? Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of reflected light from the flash off the wing scales, and this is obliterating any faint line markings.
KS005 Cryptophlebia ombrodelta
| |
|
Tortricidae Wingspan: 16mm. Just one specimen taken at the trap on the first night of operation.
KS006 Notarcha aurolinealis (Walker, 1859)
| |
|
|
Crambidae, Spilomelinae - Wingspan: 14mm.
A single specimen was recorded on the 1st September. My thanks to Ryan below for correcting the ID.
KS007 Clethrogyna turbata
| |
|
Lymantridae, Wingspan: 25mm
Four male specimens came to our trap during our stay. The unseen female is apparently flightless.
KS008 Earias insulana (Egyptian Bollworm)
| |
|
Noctuidae Wingspan: 18mm.
A single specimen came in to the trap on the 1st September. This species seems to be widespread through the Middle Eastern countries across Asia and into the Pacific region. Generally a pest species in Cotton, it also is known to feed on Okra and Hibiscus.
KS010 Unidentified Noctuid
KS012 Paraeuchaetes pseudoinsulata
| |
|
Arctiidae Wingspan: 36mm.
A plain buff coloured moth with no markings. One specimen recorded the first night of trapping here.
KS013 Creatonotos transiens
| |
|
Arctiidae, Wingspan: 40mm.
Generally a pale reddish grey allover with four small black spots on each fore-wing. Four specimens were recorded during our stay.
KS014 Endotricha mesenterialis
| |
|
Pyralidae - Wingspan: 16mm.
Five specimens were recorded during our stay. A common species throughout the region.
KS015 - Episparina tortuosalis
| |
|
Erebidae (Noctuidae), Catocalinae - Wingspan: 72mm.
Three were recorded during our stay
KS016 Psimada quadripennis
KS017 Pelagodes proquadraria
KS018 Crithote pannicula
KS019 Unidentified Noctuid
| |
|
|
Nolidae, Chloephorinae, Careini - Wingspan: 24mm.
Four were recorded through our stay. My thanks to Ryan for pointing to the sub-family of this species, but I have not yet found a species ID corresponding to this picture.
KS020 Endotricha puncticostalis
| |
|
Pyralidae - Wingspan 13mm.
Three specimens were recorded during our stay, occurring on the 2nd, 5th, and 7th September.
