A mating pair of spiders, Tetragnatha extensa I think, taken at Venus Pool Shropshire back in June 2011. The male spider can be seen transferring sperm from its palp to the females epigyne, from here she transfers it to her spermathecae where it will be stored until she uses it to fertilise her eggs.. Taken in natural light and uncropped.

An Orange Tip Butterfly egg, laid on Garlic Mustard in my garden. These butterflies only lay their eggs singly, the larvae are cannibals and would kill and eat each other if more than one was present on the same stem of the plant. This egg has been laid for a few days, when first laid they are a whitish colour, that changes to orange as in this photo after a few days then just prior to hatching the eggs become a purplish colour.Taken at 7x magnification, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK.
