Are these in use or are they for heritage runs only?

They are not used, even for heritage runs, as the insulation is rated for 600 V DC, while now the line voltage is somewhat higher, nominally 750 V. Actually there is no real technical problem, when tested they operated just fine.

So upgrade the pick-up gear to 750V and add a string of 200-300 high current diodes as a voltage dropper to feed the controls and motors. :-)
