das habe ich schon bei manchen (alten) Kirchen so gesehen.
Vielleicht sollen die alten Holzportale damit geschützt werden.

A fence AND a door. This church seems to be trying to ban visitors. The fence has created rather nice shadows on the walls of the church.

I'm not sure about the purpose of this fence. Maybe the very old
wooden door shall be protected - and vistors are using the side entrance ; )
