Schloßblende in Arles

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a 2 km long and ca. 100m deep canyon that was created by water erosion about 9000 years ago when a glacial lake emptied and cut through 2 million years old palagonite bedrock. Since Justin Bieber filmed a video in this place it has been overrun by visitors, the paths turned into bogs and the site had to be closed. The walkway along the top with viewing platforms has now been restored but entrance into the canyon is strictly forbidden (important breeding ground for gyrfalcons). We visited in the evening in slight drizzle when most of the crowds had gone. www.katlageopark.com/geosites/fjadrargljufur In the notes: Waterfall Mógárfoss at the northern end, southern entrance to the canyon

01/50 Staffel zur Weißenburg

CMT15: staircase, stairs Flight of steps in Weißenburgpark, site of a former castle and now a popular viewpoint over Stuttgart. There even is a beer garden:-) de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wei%C3%9Fenburgpark Due to its topography Stuttgart has hundreds of named and unnamed "Stäffele" (flights of steps) leading up the hills surrounding the city centre. When the terrain gets too steep streets sometimes have dead ends and continue as steps;-) de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuttgarter_St%C3%A4ffele

Brunahraun

Brunahraun is lava from the northern Laki crater row that flew down to the coast following the the valley of Hverfisfljót river. The larger lava field Eldhraun www.ipernity.com/doc/523247/44215764 was created by flows from the southern crater row down Skaftá river valley. In the backgound are the cliffs of the former coastline. The lava itself is very difficult to cross because of the many cracks and sharp edges and anyway you shouldn't because the vegetation is easily damaged and takes decades to grow back. The lava is colonized by Racomitrium moss and wild thyme.
