Why have these trees died? The groves behind them seem healthy.

Good question, Ronald. My guess is that the small depression where they grew likely collected water in the spring, which later evaporated over the summer. The water may have become more saline, which would have killed the trees, or perhaps drier summers may have meant less water over the months when the trees would grow.
