Pygoscelis Papua

Gentoo penguins are the 3rd largest species of penguin. They breed on the Antarctic peninsula and on Subantarctic islands, using snow free areas to build their nest of stones. Often the nests lie quite high up and the birds have to struggle uphill. Downwards they like to toboggan on their bellies;-) These photos are from Peterman Island where all 3 species of pygoscelis can be watched (apart from gentoo also Adelie/ Pygoscelis adeliae and chinstrap/Pygoscelis antarcticus). Visitors should keep their distance and never block the birds' way to the sea. ukaht.org/latest-news/22-interesting-facts-about-gentoo-penguins de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eselspinguin Hopping Climbing Tobogganing

Keeping afloat

HFF folks, let's keep Ipernity afloat! William Sutherland (IMA) writes: The crowdfunding campaign is separate and independent of peoples' subscription payment to Ipernity S.A. and meant to erase a significant shortfall and buy time for the transfer of ownership to IMA. If the goal is not met, Ipernity WILL shutdown at the end of the month. It will be deemed financially unviable to continue. Therefore it is critical that everyone who wants Ipernity to continue participate in the crowdfunding.

Summer evening

Looking back into Lemaire Channel at quarter past 10 in the evening. At some 65° S and still at least a day's journey from the Antarctic circle the sun does go down at night.
