The 2021 lava at Fagradalsfjall
seen from the path to Langihryggur. In the background is an eruption crater in the form of a more or less perfect circle, this type of crater is called eldborg (fire castle, Feuerburg) in Icelandic. The light coloured stuff is sulphur.


The site of the 2022 Meradalir eruption www.ipernity.com/doc/523247/51496750 lies in the valley behind that crater..

Thanks a lot, Amelia! The loneliness is deceptive, there was a steady stream of visitors and the huge parking lot was full! Only the street food truck that had been there in 2021 hadn't arrived yet;-)

Dieser Lavastrom ist von 2021. Habe ihn "live" im Internet verfolgt. War sehr interessant. Dank der Schaulustigen und den offiziellen Stellen gab es viele aktuelle Filme. Den Ausbruch von 2022 konnte ich nicht verfolgen, da war ich gerade im Urlaub.

Herzlichen Dank, jeybee! Ich hing da auch an den Webcams und habe die Videos auf YT verfolgt;-) Dieses Jahr war ich auch gerade in Urlaub, glücklicherweise in Island- und glücklicherweise war jeder für die Änderung der Reiseroute zugunsten des neuen Ausbruchs.

A fascinating pair of shots Gudrun..............in the absence of anything else I could easily have assumed I was looking at water flowing into a valley. The sulphur resembles fast flowing water.

Thank you so much, Keith! Actually the lava indeed often resembled fast flowing water and when it went over the edges of the hills it looked like a glowing waterfall! This is primitive basaltic lava from the mantle, nearly 1200°C hot and very fluid.

Großen Dank, Edna! Haha, da würden selbst die Knochen sofort verdampfen;-) Irgendwelche Idioten sind trotzdem auf gerade erkalteter Lava rumspaziert, dass da unter der dünnen Kruste noch immer sehr heiße Lava ist, geht wohl in manche Hirne nicht rein. Naja, das wäre dann halt die Darwinsche Auslese;-)

Solange sie damit nicht freiwillige Rettungskräfte gefährden... Im Falle der Lava-Spaziergänger gab es eine offizielle Verlautbarung, dass es zu gefährlich sei und solche Idioten nicht mit Rettung rechnen könnten.

This is a fine angle, it clearly shows why the lava managed to get as far as this Natthagi valley: Nar simply grew so amazinly high during the eruption, that the gravity took care of the rest!

Many thanks, Spo! The webcams, especially at night, were a fantastic sight last year, all that lava spilling over and sometimes solid bits of the crater wall breaking off and swimming on the lava river:-)
