Old Ruta 40
Legendary Ruta 40 in all its unsurfaced glory in 2003. These days travel on the surfaced and partially rerouted road is much faster and much more boring....
In the note a Calafate shrub (berberis buxofolia) with berries. It is said if you eat the berries you will return to Patagonia- it's true!

Die berühmte Ruta 40 in all ihrer Pracht im Jahre 2003. Heute ist alles geteert und teilweise begradigt, schneller und viel langweiliger;-) Im PiP ein Calafate-Strauch (berberis buxifolia) mit Beeren. Es heißt, wer von den Beeren isst, wird nach Patagonien zurückkehren. Es ist wahr:-)

Besten Dank, Erika! Ich liebe solche Straßen:-) In Patagonien sieht der Boden meist grau-weiß aus, Sand....Da buddelt man öfters Dinos und versteinerte Wälder aus.

Ich erinnere mich auch noch gerne an die wilden, spannenden Pisten im Jahr 2000 ;-) Dieses Stück kenne ich gar nicht. Wir sind alle 3 mal von Chile Chico die Ruta 41 nach Lago Posadas und von dort dann ins Kaff Bajo Caracoles. Der Busch mit den Beeren ist schön! Irgendwo südlich von Bajo Caracoles hatte ich dann ein Ruta 40-Schild abgeschraubt, das hängt heute im Treppenhaus (schlimm, schlimm, ich weiß, das tut man gar nicht) ;-)

Danke vielmals, Berny! WIr haben damals bei Perito Moreno am Seeufer übernachtet und sind dann die 40 gefahren, Cueva de las Manos, Bajo Caracoles und dann Lago Posadas. Es war so klar, dass man sogar den Cerro San Lorenzo gesehen hat!
So ein 40-Schild hätte mich auch gereizt;-)

Den San Lorenzo haben wir ein bisschen von der Strecke zwischen Lago Posadas und Bajo Caracoles gesehen, besser aber vom Valle Rio Oro (schlechtes Foto)

Schönen Dank, Udo! Hier hat's später schon noch ein paar Kurven;-) Die hat man wohl beim Teeren dann leider begradigt, aber auf der Karte erkennt man noch die Abschnitte der alten Trasse.

Stimmt, jede Kurve ist ein Highlight. Und wenn man dann auch noch durch die Zuckerrohrfelder fährt (in Australien) der 3 m hoch ist, siehste gar nix.

Australien oder auch den nordamerikanischen Kontinent stelle ich mir in der Hinsicht schwierig vor. In Patagonien ist es wenigstens nicht ganz eben und man hat öfters die Andenkette in der Ferne.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! The Calafate berries were ripe and tasted like a cross between sloe and blueberry. People make lovely jam out of them. I wonder whether your Fife berberis berries tasted the same.

Die Piste sieht wirklich spannend aus. Erinnert mich in dem Zustand auch an den Norwegenurlaub mit meinen Eltern 1970. Nördlich von Trondheim gab es viele solcher Strecken.

Besten Dank, Percy! Ja, an die Straßen in Norwegen kann ich mich aus Fotos von Lutz erinnern! Abseits der Hauptstraßen findet man die heute noch, besonders in den Fjell-Regionen und oft als nur im Sommer geöffnete Mautstraßen.
