Diamond Beach

The icebergs floating on Jökulsárlón stem from Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. A very short river connects the glacial lagoon to the sea where fragments of icebergs dot the black lava beach.

Die Eisberge auf dem Jökulsárlón kommen vom Breiðamerkurjökull, einem Auslassgletscher des Vatnajökull. Ein sehr kurzer Fluss verbindet die Gletscherlagune mit dem Meer, wo Fragmente von Eisbergen am schwarzen Lavastrand liegen.

Herzlichen Dank, Udo! Ja, leider, die Lagune wird immer größer und bei konservativer Rechnung (nur 1,5 Grad Erwärmung) wird Island in 200 Jahren keine Gletscher mehr haben. Was das für die Vulkane drunter bedeutet, kann man sich ausmalen, da wird's zur Sache gehen.

Is this a sign of global warming, Gudrun? It's very hot here, but not as bad as the main continent of Europe. We started our walk early today and were back inside the house by 11.30. I would just love to walk barefoot on this beach and dip my toes in the icy water even for the briefest of seconds.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! It definitely is due to global heating, they expect that all Icelandic glaciers will be gone in about 200 years. The glacier lagoon is getting steadily bigger and the glaciers ever thinner and smaller.
I don't think it would be a good idea to walk barefoot, volcanic glass can cut;-)

Herzlichen Dank, Karin! Ja, die schmelzen allmählich. Auf der Lagune schwimmen etwas größere Eisberge und wenn die zerbrechen, schaffen es die Brocken durch den Fluss ans Meer, wo sie dann kleingemacht werden;-) In der Regel ist der Boden ziemlich kühl, aber wenn die Sonne scheint, kann sich Lavasand schnell aufheizen.
