Wismar: St. Georgen

Wismar: St. Georgen
St. Georgen is one of three monumental "brick gothic" churches in Wismar and was built in the 15th century. Badly damaged in an air raid in April 1945 the church further deteriorated until it was finally reconstructed after reunification. The church is now also being used as a concert venue. Wismar together with Stralsund gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2002.

I love the lofty arches in the PiPs, Gudrun. Such terrible devastation went on in many cities during WW2. It's good to see that this church is now sympathetically restored, and has been awarded WH status. Is it still used as a place of worship?

Thank you so much, Amelia! The sad thing is that the devastation happened in the last days of the war. Add to that the neglect during GDR times and it is a wonder they managed to restore it at all. Yes, apart from being used for concerts it is still a church though the artwork it once housed was still in other churches in Wismar at the time we visited.
